2020 Edition Of WWE Payback

Roman reigns beat the themed braun strowman and the actual wrestling ring to win the universal championship nia jax and shayna baszler are your new women's tag team champions and king corbin makes his matt riddle feud uncomfortable but most importantly of all keith lee beat randy orton clean and this is payback 2020 aka sunday night.

The thing about payback is that it also means retribution which just so happens to be the same name of that pesky faction that keeps invading raw and smackdown i'm sure they'll definitely feature in loads of different matches and angles throughout the night members of attribution were involved in any matches or angles at the show.

Ruby Riott & Liv Morgan Defeats The IIconics

After the pre-show didn't feature renee young i miss you ranee young we got the kickoff match of the iconics versus the riot squad who are actually able to tell a story in their wrestling match get in a luxurious nine whole minutes rather than their usual two minute slots on raw the iconics cut a promo in australian and despite liv morgan and ruby riot debuting new matching gear they already seem to be having dissension the coordinated types mean nothing to you in isolation this was a decent match with a story live and ruby couldn't gel which almost led to morgan storming off but then she realized their best friends ran back down and one with riot by her side the problem is this was a story told six weeks ago the iconics and the riot squad have been stuck in some kind of storyline purgatory for a month and a half when nothing seems to progress after a few scrappy spots ruby pinned billy k with liv's help finally showing everyone they're now on the same page which they made sure to confirm to the pre-show panel yelling at jbl this is the beginning of the six weeks of already being a tag team seemingly with the new name livin riot and possibly positioning themselves as next in line for women's tag team title shots.

United States Championship (Apollo Crews Defeats Bobby Lashley)

The opening match on the main card was apollo crews defending his united states title against bobby lashley bobby's hurt business buddies mvp and shelterman benjamin gave him the edge early on but after 10 minutes of lashley mostly working over crews apollo powered back with an awesome double german suplex spot the first of which bobby nose sold like its new japan but not even a dilo brown style frog splash and a heart-wrenching wakanda forever tribute to the recently passed chadwick boseman before his moonsault could help apollo retain lashley locked in the full nelson and cruz quickly tapped the feud seemed set to continue as apollo attacked lashley after the match to get some babyface heat back before running away classic babyface move.

Big E Defeats Sheamus

After replaying the biggie a misconfrontation from last week's talking smack for the second time which definitely seemed set the spin into a new feud biggie took on gangs of new sheamus sadly not wearing his little hat the two had a really meaty back-and-forth clash with sheamus targeting biggie's leg while big e targeted everything hitting some incredibly impressive fully overhead belly-to-belly suplexes on the taller man and his death-defying spear off the apron biggie countered a bro kick into a powerbomb 15 minutes in and hit the big ending to win giving him a really credible mid-card victory against sheamus hopefully setting him up for his continued singles run on smackdown.

 

Matt riddle's singles run on that same brand now includes that time he was called out for sexual assault in a very unwise use of real life in a wrestling promo generic wwe backstage interviewer number seven told riddle that king corbin had tweeted earlier that day tonight i proved that matt riddle is a failure in a wwe ring by the way he's already proven that he's a failure at home it's presumably a reference to riddle admitting in july that he had cheated on his wife a very charged incident considering the person he cheated with had accused him of sexual assault in june allegations which he denies considering how wwe have already been criticized for not taking part of the speaking out movement seriously with velveteen dreams accusers claiming they weren't contacted about the investigation it's remarkably insensitive for wwe to use riddles allegations as storyline fodder but move aside moral outrage because mcguire ortiz managed to get a jam that jam sign inside the thunderdome jam that jam.

Matt Riddle Defeats King Corbin 

Corbin attacked riddle just after his flip-flop entrance where he mostly worked him over with sleepers cut off hope spots and yelling at the led screens like my dad when he doesn't fully understand netflix corbin has his style of match and this was one of those riddle eventually hit a bro to sleep and a floating bro to win which like big e is another really solid victory to elevate a babyface up the smackdown card but the feud must continue riddles celebrating backstage when corbin attacked him into a catering table.

Women's Tag Team Championship

(Shayna Baszler & Nia Jax Defeats Sasha Banks & Bayley)

The best match of the night a heel and a heel versus a heel and another heel despite heal versus heel dynamics typically being crowd heat poison sasha banks and bailey versus shayna bazer and nia jax had a really fun dramatic match with a terrific finish they told the story of banks and bailey working really well together they're the best friends they've been tagging forever but that began to unravel in the face of their opponents naya and shayna who despite hating each other really started to gel basilar and naya realized out loud they could actually beat sasha and bailey which was mirrored fantastically by the moment banks and bailey realized they could lose finding themselves on the mat after naya had just kicked out just looking at each other in despair like diy falling apart in nxt and then came the incredible finish where shayna choked out bayley with sasha's arm making bailey tap there are so many layers there sasha's arm making bailey tap did bailey tap because she's got an out another title maybe she doesn't care as much about the tag belt but for sasha she's just lost her only championship and greatest of all it gave us this celebration moment from jax.

Keith Lee Defeats  Randy Orton

We got lee wearing dragon ball zed attire to take on randy autumn and appropriately wwe's booking went super saiyan yes his rubbish generic music is still there i agree he's still got an unflattering vest and aha 90 of the preceding video package was about drew mcintyre but look keith does have his tight shorts back it's like i'm wearing nothing at all nothing at all nothing at all i understand the frustration behind the main roster needlessly tampering with what we love from nxt but we also need to separate superficial annoyances from genuinely great pushes because keith lee beat randy orton clean in the middle of the ring with a spirit bomb randy bumped around to make him look great hell randy actually bumped orton isn't taking an elevated power bomb for just anyone and despite us all presuming wwe would do a screwy finish there was no mcintyre to be seen but it's rubbish because he's wearing a vest and i don't like his song.

Rey and Dominik Mysterio Defeats Seth Rollins and Murphy

In the match i would have preferred at summerslam as opposed to dominic just getting hit with a kendo stick for 20 minutes we then got a really fun tag between seth rollins and buddy against rey mysterio and dom with three fantastic workers out there with him dominic looked far better than last week getting to hit springboard armed drags really nice looking dropkicks and just general lucha and after almost half a year and half of rey's vision the mysterious finally got their revenge with a great final sequence murphy accidentally corner kicking seth in the head for dominic to win with a 619 and frog splash on buddy who threw in about nine extra bumps to make dom look the best he could possibly teasing a messiah faction split seth looked in a proper grump with murphy in the post match.

Universal Championship Match (No Holds Barred)

(Roman Reigns Defeats “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt & Braun Strowman)

The storyline running throughout the entire night was whether roman would actually sign the contract for the bluniversal title match the mystery continued for the majority of the main event itself which saw the fiend and braun strowman hit a finisher fest for 10 minutes complete with braun tackling the fiend off the stage alexa bliss looking increasingly fiendish watching on and the themed himself getting quote from michael cole some kind of mallet no michael cole it's not some kind of mallet it's quite clearly a mallet then 10 minutes in the fiend hit a superplex that broke the ring and sent referee charles robinson glitching out of the arena like he was playing 2k20 seeing everyone wiped out the big dog's music hit accompanied by haman and wearing a t-shirt instead of a vest again i understand people wanting a more different presentation of heal roman but just the visual of having paul in his corner is enough for me for now reigns signed the contract on the ramp and wailed on both braun and the fiend with a chair he kicked the fiend in the dick when bray tried to fight back and then speared strowman to win i don't know if he's a heel you know i just don't know about it maybe he's returned as a badass crucially the fiend wasn't pinned to lose his title and roman is the bluniversal champion that was payback 2020.
